28 October 2024 - Radical Help, Hilary Cottam
By Peter Lawrence, Director
A must read for anyone who wants to create positive change in their community business or workplace and is waiting for permission.
There are ideas but dance like motes of dust at the periphery of our vision, catching our attention briefly before they disappear. And there are others that stick: that we return to again and again: ideas that for whatever reason define who we are and what we do.
In her book, Radical Help, Hilary Cottam sets out the problem we are all facing and ways in which we can start to do something about it.
Our modern life requires a broader range of skills including the ability to collaborate create and think laterally. A different model is required.”
She sets out 6 principles,
The Principles
GROW THE GOOD LIFE - a guiding for good lives well lived.
DEVELOP CAPABILITY – being and doing, creating capability not dependency
ABOVE ALL RELATIONSHIPS - simple human bonds between us
CONNECT MULTIPLE FORMS OF RESOURCE – connecting new and productive ways
CREATE POSSIBILITY - create a pathway that starts with the possibility.
OPEN – WE TAKE CARE OF EVERYONE -include everyone.
She goes on to say,
“This work requires courageous leadership and many ordinary conversations.
Devolution of power to local regions and communities could create the possibility for new models. Here is an invitation to join in this tradition of help that is rooted in our history and our modern day experience.
We know what to do, don't let's wait for permission from someone else.”
